Coupang shares fell about 5.3% in pre-open trading after the company released its Q2 2026 financials following Tuesday's market close. The company reported revenue of $8.9 billion, roughly $170 million below analyst forecasts, representing 4% year-over-year growth on a reported basis and 10% growth on a constant-currency basis.
The top-line shortfall was accompanied by a steep move to a net loss of $570 million, a sharp reversal from a $32 million profit in Q2 2025. The most significant contributor to that swing was a $410 million administrative fine imposed by Korean regulatory authorities related to a 2025 data incident.
Not all figures disappointed. On an adjusted basis, Coupang reported a loss per share of $0.09, which was smaller than the consensus estimate of a $0.21 loss. Adjusted EBITDA came in at $163 million, materially ahead of the roughly $7 million that analysts had forecast.
Management's forward-looking commentary, however, limited the upside from the adjusted results. The company projected Q3 constant-currency revenue growth of 8-9% and warned of a 300-400 basis-point contraction in adjusted EBITDA margins. That guidance pushed the expected timing for a full margin recovery out to about mid-2027. Coupang also said it intends to appeal parts of the regulatory fine, but noted the payment remains enforceable while the appeal proceeds.
The wider U.S. equity market provided little support for the stock: the S&P 500 was up 0.3%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.3%, and the Nasdaq was essentially flat on the day. With a muted market backdrop and limited lift from peers in the global e-commerce and online retail space, Coupang's shares were exposed to company-specific headwinds.
Those factors - the revenue miss, the size of the regulatory charge, the compression in operating margins, and cautious near-term guidance - combined to prompt investors to reprice the stock lower in pre-market activity. Shares remained near the lower portion of their 52-week range of $14.92 to $34.08.
Key takeaways
- Revenue: $8.9 billion in Q2 2026, about $170 million below estimates; growth of 4% reported and 10% in constant currency.
- Profitability: Reported net loss of $570 million versus a $32 million profit a year earlier; adjusted loss per share was $0.09 versus expected $0.21 and adjusted EBITDA was $163 million versus about $7 million expected.
- Guidance: Q3 constant-currency revenue growth of 8-9%; adjusted EBITDA margins expected to contract by 300-400 basis points; full margin recovery targeted around mid-2027.
Context for markets
- Primary sectors affected include global e-commerce and online retail, with implications for investor sentiment in related consumer and technology stocks.
Risks and uncertainties
- Regulatory risk - The enforceable $410 million administrative fine creates near-term cash and earnings pressure while portions of the fine are under appeal.
- Operational margin risk - Management's forecast of a 300-400 basis-point margin contraction and a delayed recovery to mid-2027 increases execution risk for margin improvement plans.
- Market sensitivity - With a muted broader market and little support from peers, stock price performance may remain vulnerable to company-specific developments.
Investors will likely weigh the stronger-than-expected adjusted metrics against the headline revenue miss, the substantial regulatory charge, and the conservative guidance when assessing Coupang's near-term outlook.
