A recently published study questions the commonly repeated idea that robusta coffee is inherently more resilient to climate change than other coffee types. The research, published Thursday in the Wiley journal Sustainable Development, argues that conclusions reached in earlier work should be treated with caution.
The study's lead author, Aaron Davis, who is senior research leader of crops and global change at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, characterized the belief in robusta's superior climate tolerance as an "internet myth" that began circulating roughly ten years ago. According to Davis, prior analyses contained errors that weakened their conclusions. Among the problems cited was the tendency to treat irrigated farms as if they represented ideal or typical growing circumstances rather than exceptions. The paper also noted previous work did not adequately account for robusta's susceptibility to drought.
Robusta, often framed as a lower-quality counterpart to arabica beans, nonetheless makes up a substantial portion of the global coffee supply. The paper points out that Vietnam and Brazil produce the majority of the tens of millions of bags of robusta that reach international markets each year.
Those who have promoted robusta as an adaptation pathway for the coffee sector now face a complication: if robusta's tolerance to heat and other climate stresses is less certain than earlier studies implied, the rationale for shifting planting and procurement strategies toward robusta weakens. With global demand for robusta rising, a change in scientific understanding about its resilience could have consequences across the supply chain, affecting farmers' crop choices, traders' sourcing and consumer availability.
The research also noted the practical urgency of adaptation. A Vietnamese coffee official stated earlier this month that adapting to climate change has moved to the forefront as an immediate priority for safeguarding production, rather than being treated as a longer-term issue.
In its conclusions, the Sustainable Development paper recommends treating previous assessments of robusta's climate resilience as tentative rather than definitive. The authors observe that media reports, farming communities and some researchers have commonly cited robusta's relative heat tolerance as a cornerstone of the coffee industry's response to climate pressures, a position the new analysis argues requires more cautious interpretation.
The study does not offer prescriptive measures but emphasizes that the evidence base underpinning claims about robusta's climate advantages is less solid than has been portrayed. As the sector continues to confront climate-related risks, the findings call for more careful appraisal of assumptions that inform production and market strategies.
