Greek equities ended the trading day with a small gain on Thursday as several key sectors pushed the Athens General Composite into positive territory. At the close in Athens, the benchmark rose 0.25%.

The uplift was led by stocks in the Banking, Construction and Travel sectors, which contributed to the marketwide advance. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners on the Athens Stock Exchange by 59 to 46, while 26 issues finished unchanged.

Among individual names, Lavipharm SA (AT:LPHr) was the session's strongest performer, climbing 5.00% or 0.08 points to close at 1.68. The move pushed Lavipharm to three-year highs during the session. Unibios Holdings SA (AT:VILr) gained 4.64% or 0.12 points to finish at 2.70, and Optima bank SA (AT:OPTIMAr) rose 3.47% or 0.31 points to end the day at 9.11.

Commodity markets showed divergent moves during the session. Gold futures for June delivery advanced 1.59% or 74.59 to trade at $4,768.89 a troy ounce. Market takeaway - The session closed with a modest gain for the Athens General Composite, with sector leadership concentrated in banking, construction and travel stocks. Market breadth was positive, and commodity prices moved in opposite directions, with gold strengthening while crude eased.

  • Top winners: Lavipharm SA (AT:LPHr), Unibios Holdings SA (AT:VILr), Optima bank SA (AT:OPTIMAr).
  • Top losers: Allwyn AG (AT:ALWr), Piraeus Port (AT:OLPr), Dimand Societe Anonyme for Real Estate Constructions (AT:DIMANDr).

Risks

  • Selected major stocks recorded notable declines during the session - for example Allwyn AG (AT:ALWr) fell 3.21% - indicating company-specific downside pressure in parts of the market, which could weigh on related sectors such as travel and leisure.
  • Volatility in energy markets, with crude oil futures down by around 3.9%, represents an uncertainty that can influence inflation expectations and profit margins for energy-sensitive sectors.
  • Currency and commodity moves remain mixed; while gold strengthened, currencies were largely unchanged, leaving markets exposed to sudden swings in either FX or commodity prices that are not signalled by the current session’s data.
