Anthropic’s Claude Platform Debuts on AWS with Native API Access

Customers can use existing AWS credentials and consolidated billing to call Anthropic’s native APIs while data processing remains managed by Anthropic outside AWS security boundaries

Amazon Web Services has added native access to Anthropic’s Claude Platform within AWS accounts, allowing customers to call the same APIs and tools available directly from Anthropic using their AWS identity and billing. The integration supports IAM and API key authentication, records activity in CloudTrail, bills consumption through AWS Marketplace, and is operated by Anthropic with requests processed outside the AWS security perimeter. The service is available in 19 regions.

Key Points

  • Customers can call Anthropic’s native Claude Platform APIs directly from AWS using existing IAM credentials and consolidated billing through AWS Marketplace - impacts cloud and enterprise AI adoption.
  • Anthropic operates the platform and processes data outside AWS security boundaries while AWS captures activity in CloudTrail for monitoring - affects security and compliance practices across cloud and AI-focused enterprises.
  • Service supports workspace partitioning, IAM Signature Version 4 and API key authentication, and is available in 19 regions with usage visible in the Claude Console and AWS Cost Explorer - relevant for IT, cloud procurement, and finance teams managing cloud spend.

Amazon Web Services announced availability of the Claude Platform on AWS on Monday, enabling customers to reach Anthropic’s native platform directly from their AWS accounts without setting up separate credentials or billing relationships.

The offering exposes the same suite of APIs and capabilities customers can access through Anthropic itself. That includes the Messages API, Claude Managed Agents, the advisor tool, web search and web fetch, the MCP connector, Agent Skills, code execution, and the files API. AWS is the first cloud provider to provide the native Claude Platform experience in this way.

Authentication and billing are handled through AWS. Users sign in with existing AWS IAM credentials and consumption is billed via AWS Marketplace on a usage basis. Activity carried out through the service is logged to AWS CloudTrail to support monitoring and auditing.

Operational control of the platform remains with Anthropic. The company operates the platform and processes requests and data outside the AWS security boundary. The integration is presented as complementary to Claude models available through Amazon Bedrock, giving customers multiple routes to access Anthropic’s capabilities.

Deployment and operational details are designed to support team and project separation. Customers create workspaces within the platform to isolate projects or business units while keeping billing centralized through their AWS account. Two authentication approaches are supported: IAM with AWS Signature Version 4, and API keys. AWS recommends using temporary IAM credentials where stronger security is required, and suggests API keys for initial testing or exploration.

The platform is compatible with Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and other API clients. Usage metrics and breakdowns are available in the Claude Console, with reporting by workspace, by AWS IAM principal, and by time period. Costs for the service appear alongside other cloud expenses in AWS Cost Explorer, and organizations can allocate spending using resource tags.

Claude Platform on AWS is available across 19 regions. The roll-out includes US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon), Canada (Central), South America (Se3o Paulo), multiple European locations, and several Asia Pacific regions including Tokyo, Seoul, Melbourne, Jakarta, and Sydney.

Key takeaways

  • Native access to Anthropic’s Claude Platform is now available through AWS accounts, with unified identity and consumption billing.
  • The platform is operated by Anthropic and processes requests and data outside AWS security boundaries, while activity is tracked in AWS CloudTrail.
  • Service availability spans 19 regions and supports workspace separation, IAM and API key authentication, and visibility through the Claude Console and AWS Cost Explorer.

Risks

  • Requests and data are processed outside the AWS security boundary since Anthropic operates the platform - this could complicate security and compliance controls for regulated industries.
  • Authentication options vary in security posture: AWS recommends temporary IAM credentials for higher security and API keys for initial exploration, creating potential configuration risks if best practices are not followed.
  • Regional availability is limited to 19 specified regions; organizations operating outside these locations may face access or latency constraints.
