Poland's main equity gauge ended the trading day higher on Friday, with the WIG30 index finishing up 1.29% in Warsaw. Gains were concentrated in the Banking, Media and Construction sectors, which collectively underpinned the market advance.
Top movers and notable highs
The session's top performer on the WIG30 was Jastrzebska Spotka Weglowa SA (WA:JSW), which climbed 4.85% - an increase of 1.71 points - to close at 37.00. That move took JSW to a 52-week high. Construction group Budimex SA (WA:BDXP) also contributed to the upside, adding 3.23% or 22.20 points to finish at 709.00. In the banking space, Erste Bank Polska SA (WA:EBP) rose 2.81% - gaining 20.40 points - to end the session at 745.60, a level described as an all-time high for the stock.
On the downside, Kruk SA (WA:KRU) declined 1.08% or 4.30 points to close at 395.00. CD PROJEKT SA (WA:CDR) slipped 0.30% or 0.70 points to 232.00, while Pepco Group Nv (WA:PCOP) eased 0.10% or 0.04 points to finish at 41.83.
Market breadth and sector context
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners on the Warsaw Stock Exchange by 288 to 221, with 125 stocks unchanged at the close. The net breadth favoured rising names, consistent with the WIG30's gain.
Commodities and currencies
Commodity prices were mixed to lower alongside the equity move. Crude oil for October delivery traded down 0.61% - a decline of $0.56 - to $90.74 per barrel. Brent for November delivery fell 0.10% or $0.10 to $95.42 a barrel. Precious metals also retreated: the December Gold Futures contract was down 1.17%, a drop of $52.94, to trade at $4,486.96 per troy ounce.
Currency moves were modest. The euro priced in Polish zloty terms (EUR/PLN) was down 0.12% at 4.31, while the U.S. dollar against the zloty (USD/PLN) was essentially unchanged, moving 0.09% to 3.71. Separately, the U.S. Dollar Index Futures rose 0.20% to 99.08.
Closing observations
Friday's session saw selective strength among banking, media and construction names lift the headline WIG30 index. A majority of issues moved higher by the close, even as several individual stocks pulled back modestly and commodities, including crude oil and gold, retreated.
