Not all names moved higher. Celestica Inc. (TSX:CLS) led decliners, falling 8.67% or 40.84 points to close at 430.07. Denison Mines Corp (TSX:DML) slipped 5.53%, down 0.24 points to 4.10, while Hammond Power Solutions Inc (TSX:HPSa) declined 5.52% or 16.03 points to end the day at 274.54.
Breadth favored advancers on the Toronto Stock Exchange, with 556 stocks rising against 413 that fell, and 76 issues trading unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, an indicator that measures implied volatility for S&P/TSX Composite options, moved lower by 3.44% to 14.88 as market anxiety eased during the session.
Commodities and FX moves
In commodities trading, August gold futures ticked higher by 0.14%, an increase of 5.80, to settle at 4,056.00 a troy ounce. Energy contracts fell: September West Texas Intermediate crude declined 1.95% or 1.80 to close at 90.39 a barrel, while the September Brent contract dropped 2.54% or 2.56 to 98.13 a barrel.
Currency markets were relatively quiet. CAD/USD was essentially unchanged, at 0.71 after a 0.13% move, and CAD/EUR registered little change at 0.62 with a 0.06% variation. The US Dollar Index Futures was modestly higher at 101.33, up 0.04%.
