Shares of Teladoc Inc (NYSE:TDOC) fell 2.8% and GoodRx Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:GDRX) slipped 2.6% on Thursday following OpenAI's announcement of a new ChatGPT health feature that permits users to link personal medical records and Apple Health data to the chatbot.
The feature, which is available to logged-in ChatGPT users aged 18 and older in the United States on web and iOS, supports connections to Apple Health and medical records from certain US hospital systems as well as One Medical and Function Health. OpenAI said more than 300 million people use ChatGPT weekly for health-related questions.
OpenAI outlined several capabilities that the connected-data feature will enable. Users can ask the chatbot to compare current lab results with prior tests, summarize what has changed since medical appointments, or assess how sleep and activity patterns relate to daily routines. The functionality is accessible across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro subscription tiers.
For paid customers, OpenAI deployed GPT-5.6 Sol, which the company described as its strongest model for health tasks. Free users retain access to GPT-5.5 Instant. OpenAI said it collaborated with physicians to develop evaluations that measure accuracy, safety, communication, and completeness of the system's health-related outputs.
The company said an early finding from testing was that more than 70% of health-related conversations happened outside a dedicated health space in ChatGPT, prompting OpenAI to integrate the connected-data feature across all conversations rather than confining it to a separate health environment.
OpenAI emphasized that users must grant permission before ChatGPT can access any connected health information. The company stated that connected medical records and Apple Health data are not used to train its foundation models or to target advertisements. It also said all ChatGPT conversations are encrypted at rest and in transit, with additional encryption protections applied specifically to health information.
Users retain control over their connections to health data. OpenAI said individuals can disconnect their health information at any time, and that data will be deleted from its systems within 30 days after disconnection.
Context for markets
The market reaction - modest declines in the shares of two companies focused on telehealth and consumer health services - came on the same day the new ChatGPT capability and model deployment were announced. The announcement couples expanded functionality for consumers with assurances about consent and data handling.
