Rheinmetall AG has secured a comprehensive defense contract package from Romania valued at €5.7 billion, marking the largest international contract package in the company’s recent history. The Directorate General for Armaments awarded the contracts on May 29, 2026, as part of the European Union’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) programme, and the relevant agreements have now been signed.
The scope of the work spans multiple defense domains. It covers the manufacture and delivery of combat vehicles, air defense systems, ammunition and ammunition components, as well as naval vessels. Deliveries are set to begin in 2028 and are planned to be completed by 2030.
At the center of the land systems portion are 298 Lynx vehicles, a latest-generation family of combat vehicles. The majority of those vehicles will be configured as armored personnel carriers, while the remainder will include reconnaissance, command post and medical variants. The package also comprises Skyranger air defense systems that are based on the Lynx platform, and medium-caliber ammunition intended for use in air defense and in armored personnel carriers.
The maritime element of the contract features two offshore patrol vessels and two diver support vessels. In addition to the vehicles, systems and ordnance, Rheinmetall plans a significant industrial expansion in Romania: the company will invest several hundred million euros in the country, with a large share of the value added being generated locally within the NATO and EU member state.
Rheinmetall expects the programme to create thousands of new jobs and to integrate over 200 subcontractors into its supply network. The Düsseldorf-based technology group will expand existing capacities in Romania, building on the long-standing presence of its subsidiary Rheinmetall Automecanica at the Medias base. The major contracts will also be executed at other sites within Romania.
Key points
- €5.7 billion contract awarded by Romania under the EU SAFE programme, signed on May 29, 2026.
- Deliverables include 298 Lynx combat vehicles, Skyranger air defense systems, medium-caliber ammunition, two offshore patrol vessels and two diver support vessels, with deliveries from 2028 through 2030.
- Significant industrial footprint expansion in Romania with several hundred million euros of investment, thousands of expected jobs and over 200 subcontractors integrated into the supply chain.
Risks and uncertainties
- Schedule risk - Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2028 and be completed by 2030, creating potential execution and timing pressure for manufacturing and logistics; this primarily affects defense manufacturing and shipbuilding sectors.
- Supply-chain complexity - Integration of over 200 subcontractors into the supply network adds coordination and quality-control challenges, impacting defense suppliers and regional manufacturing.
- Implementation scale - The commitment to invest several hundred million euros and expand capacities across multiple sites means execution risk tied to industrial ramp-up and workforce hiring in Romania.
The awarded programme spans multiple product lines and operational domains, and the contracts will be executed across Rheinmetall’s Romanian facilities, notably expanding activity at the Medias base where Rheinmetall Automecanica has operated for many years. The company emphasizes that a substantial portion of the added value will be produced in Romania, and the contracts are intended to be carried out at additional sites throughout the country.
All components of the contract package have been formally signed following the May 29, 2026 award under the EU SAFE initiative, setting a production and delivery timetable that begins in 2028 and concludes in 2030.
