Nvidia shares moved modestly higher in pre-market trading, gaining 0.6% after the company confirmed a definitive agreement to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion. When combined with about $1 billion in employee retention packages, the total transaction value approaches $14 billion.
The acquisition provides Nvidia with direct entry to an open-source AI platform used by over 18 million developers across more than 200,000 organizations. Hugging Face hosts millions of AI models and open datasets, extending Nvidia’s reach beyond its core GPU hardware business into the software and model-distribution layer of the artificial intelligence stack.
Analyst commentary reinforced the upbeat tone around the stock. JPMorgan reaffirmed its Overweight rating and maintained a $320 price target. Separately, New Street Research’s Pierre Ferragu publicly said a price above $400 is "very likely" within the next 18 months. A different set of analysts published a Buy reaffirmation the same day, citing Nvidia’s AI-driven growth trajectory and its reshoring manufacturing strategy as potential buffers against semiconductor tariff headwinds highlighted by Commerce Secretary Lutnick.
Market observers also pointed to strong results from a peer in the AI semiconductor space. Broadcom reported fiscal third-quarter 2026 revenue of $29.59 billion, topping consensus estimates, and disclosed that its AI semiconductor revenue surged 221% year-over-year to $16.7 billion. Those figures were interpreted as evidence of the scale of enterprise AI infrastructure spending that continues to support Nvidia’s business model.
Broader market moves were modestly constructive on the day. The S&P 500 rose about 0.3% while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added roughly 0.6%. Nonetheless, the combination of rising expectations for further Federal Reserve rate hikes and ongoing discussions about semiconductor tariffs has restrained larger gains among high-growth technology names.
Taken together, the Hugging Face acquisition announcement appears to be the principal catalyst for Nvidia’s pre-market lift. The deal pairs strategic expansion into AI software and model distribution with an already-positive analyst consensus and a sector-wide narrative of strong AI-related spending. Market participants cited these factors as continuing to validate Nvidia’s positioning as a core provider of infrastructure for the artificial intelligence economy.
