Mexico's stock market ended lower on Thursday as sector-wide weakness in Industrials, Consumer Goods & Services and Consumer Staples pushed the S&P/BMV IPC down 1.54% at the close.
At the session's end the index recorded the 1.54% decline after broad selling. Declining issues outnumbered advancers on the Mexico Stock Exchange by 147 to 73, while 16 stocks finished unchanged.
Top performers - Among individual components, Bolsa Mexicana De Valores SAB De CV (BMV:BOLSAA) was the session leader on the index, rising 2.63% or 0.95 points to finish at 37.10. Grupo Carso, S.A.B. De C.V. (BMV:GCARSOA1) posted a gain of 2.25% or 3.09 points to close at 140.48. Sigma Foods SAB de CV (BMV:SIGMAFA) also moved higher, up 1.57% or 0.26 points to 16.86 in late trade.
Largest decliners - On the downside, Arca Continental, S.A.B. De C.V. (BMV:AC) fell 4.32% or 8.88 points to end at 196.66. Gruma SAB de CV (BMV:GRUMAB) declined 4.14% or 11.57 points to close at 268.11, and Genomma Lab Internacional SAB De CV (BMV:LABB) slipped 3.58% or 0.52 points to 14.00.
Two companies reached notable low marks during the session: shares of Gruma SAB de CV (BMV:GRUMAB) fell to three-year lows, closing at 268.11 after the 4.14% drop. Genomma Lab Internacional SAB De CV (BMV:LABB) moved to 52-week lows, finishing at 14.00 following the 3.58% decline.
Commodities and energy - In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery decreased 2.40% or 99.50 to $4,052.40 a troy ounce. Crude oil for September delivery rose 3.78% or 3.16 to reach $86.80 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract increased 0.13% or 0.13 to trade at $100.67 a barrel.
Currencies and indexes - Currency pairs showed modest moves: USD/MXN was up 0.06% to 17.51, and EUR/MXN rose 0.03% to 19.91. The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.31% at 101.27.
The market action reflected a broadly negative session for Mexican equities, with several consumer-facing and industrial names among the weakest performers while some infrastructure-related and holding companies posted gains. Price action in gold and oil diverged, with gold sliding sharply and oil rising, and the dollar strengthened marginally against the peso and other currencies noted above.
