On Thursday, July 23, Google began offering a selfie video option for Google Account sign-ins and account recovery. The feature allows eligible users to create a brief verification recording by following guided head movements that capture multiple angles of their face. Google stores that initial clip and compares it to live videos submitted during subsequent sign-in attempts to verify identity.
Google said the selfie video will be stored only if the user gives consent, and account holders may remove the saved recording at any time through their Google account settings. The company also said the video is intended to be used solely for sign-in purposes, unless a user explicitly opts in to permit additional uses.
The company described several protections built into the system to counter impersonation attempts. These include automated security checks that compare a new recording with the stored verification video and require users to perform movements that demonstrate the video is captured live. Google specifically noted these measures are designed to guard against deepfakes and other forms of spoofing.
Google framed the feature as an additional option for authentication and account recovery in situations where users cannot recall passwords or lack access to their preferred devices. Historically, companies have relied on trusted devices, registered phone numbers, recovery contacts and two-factor authentication methods for account-recovery workflows; the selfie video provides another avenue for regaining access.
At the same time, the move touches on longstanding conversations about biometric data and facial recognition. The company acknowledged that biometric and face-based systems have prompted privacy questions and said consent and the ability to delete stored videos are central to the new capability.
The selfie video sign-in is available to eligible Google Account users starting on Thursday. Google emphasized the recordings are optional and controlled by the user, and that additional security checks are in place to detect impersonation or manipulated media when verifying live sign-ins.
