Germany's stock market finished the trading session lower on Thursday, with selling concentrated in several sectors that pushed the benchmark down by just over half a percent.
At the close in Frankfurt, the DAX was 0.53% lower. The MDAX slipped 0.35%, and the TecDAX fell 0.94%.
The day saw a mix of movers across capitalizations. Leading the gainers on the DAX, Symrise AG Inh. O.N. (ETR:SY1G) advanced 1.91% - adding 1.68 points to close at 89.44. GEA Group AG (ETR:G1AG) rose 1.77%, or 1.05 points, to finish at 60.30, and Beiersdorf AG O.N. (ETR:BEIG) ended the session up 1.60% - 1.26 points - at 79.96.
On the downside, Infineon Technologies AG NA O.N. (ETR:IFXGn) was the largest decliner among the headline names, down 3.86% or 2.60 points to 64.71 at the close. E.ON SE (ETR:EONGn) fell 2.30%, or 0.44 points, to 18.90, while Siemens Energy AG (ETR:ENR1n) dropped 2.26% - a decline of 3.44 points - to finish at 148.74.
Mid-cap action on the MDAX showed Krones AG O.N. (ETR:KRNG) as the strongest performer, climbing 2.95% to 111.60. Fuchs Se Pref (ETR:FPE3_p) added 2.86% to close at 40.32, and Knorr-Bremse AG (ETR:KBX) gained 2.57% to end the day at 103.60.
Among the MDAX laggards, Aixtron SE (ETR:AIXGn) lost 5.23% to settle at 40.05, Aroundtown Property Holdings PLC (ETR:AT1) declined 3.11% to 2.12, and Nemetschek AG O.N. (ETR:NEKG) was down 2.94% to 56.15 at the close.
In the TecDAX, Ottobock SE & Co KgaA (ETR:OBCK) outperformed, rising 7.81% to 58.00. Draegerwerk VZO O.N. (ETR:DRWG_p) increased 2.68% to 88.00, and Carl Zeiss Meditec AG (ETR:AFXG) added 2.25% to close at 30.00.
The session also recorded heavier losses among a handful of names. SMA Solar Technology AG (ETR:S92G) fell 6.20% to 58.20, joining Aixtron and Infineon among the more sizeable decliners in late trade.
Market breadth was narrowly negative on the day: 336 stocks rose while 316 fell on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange; 33 issues finished unchanged.
Aroundtown Property Holdings PLC (ETR:AT1) touched a 52-week low during the session, sliding 3.11% - or 0.07 - to 2.12.
The DAX volatility index, which reflects implied volatility in DAX options, ticked down 0.05% to 18.05.
Commodities moved modestly alongside equities. Gold futures for August delivery were reported down 1.17% - a decline of 47.45 - to $4,004.35 a troy ounce. In energy markets, crude oil for August delivery rose 0.05% or $0.04 to $79.64 a barrel, and the September Brent contract increased 0.09% or $0.08 to $85.03 a barrel.
In currency markets, EUR/USD was essentially unchanged, moving 0.20% to 1.14, while EUR/GBP was flat at 0.26% to 0.85. The US Dollar Index Futures rose 0.27% to 100.54.
