Bovespa Retreats to Three-Month Low as Materials, Consumption and Real Estate Slide

Market closed lower in Sao Paulo with mixed individual stock movers and muted currency action

Brazil's main stock index closed lower on Friday, slipping 0.70% to a fresh three-month low as losses in Basic Materials, Consumption and Real Estate weighed on the market. Gains in select names such as Totvs and Usiminas were outweighed by steep declines in Minerva, Braskem and Magazine Luiza. Commodity prices and the CBOE Brazil Etf Volatility index moved notably alongside relatively steady currency quotes.

Brazilian equities finished lower on Friday, with the Bovespa index closing down 0.70% at a new three-month low in Sao Paulo. The retreat came as shares in the Basic Materials, Consumption and Real Estate sectors lost ground, dragging the index downward.

Among individual performers, Totvs SA (BVMF:TOTS3) was the session's top gainer on the Bovespa, advancing 4.16% or 1.32 points to close at 33.30. Usinas Siderurgicas de Minas Gerais SA USIMINAS Pref (BVMF:USIM5) added 4.04% or 0.43 points to finish at 10.92, while Eneva SA (BVMF:ENEV3) rose 2.52% or 0.63 points to 25.26 in late trade.

On the downside, Minerva SA/Brazil (BVMF:BEEF3) was the weakest stock of the session, sliding 7.05% or 0.28 points to end at 3.71. Braskem SA (BVMF:BRKM5) fell 6.02% or 0.67 points to close at 10.37, and Magazine Luiza SA (BVMF:MGLU3) dropped 5.83% or 0.37 points to 6.03.

Market breadth was mixed: rising stocks outnumbered decliners on the B3 exchange by 499 to 439, while 47 issues finished unchanged.

Certain individual stock milestones were recorded during the session. Shares of Usinas Siderurgicas de Minas Gerais SA USIMINAS Pref (BVMF:USIM5) climbed to three-year highs, gaining 4.04% or 0.43 to reach 10.92. By contrast, Magazine Luiza SA (BVMF:MGLU3) fell to 52-week lows, losing 5.83% or 0.37 to settle at 6.03.

The CBOE Brazil Etf Volatility index, which measures the implied volatility of Bovespa options, declined 4.36% to 30.50, marking a new three-month low for that gauge.

Commodities saw mixed moves during the session. Gold futures for August delivery rose 0.92% or 41.50 to $4,573.90 a troy ounce. In energy, crude oil for July delivery fell 1.18% or 1.05 to $87.85 a barrel. Agricultural markets also moved lower, with the July US coffee C contract dropping 3.04% or 8.35 to trade at $265.90.

Currency pairs were relatively stable. USD/BRL was essentially unchanged, moving 0.07% to 5.03, while EUR/BRL rose 0.12% to 5.89. The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.10% at 98.87.
