Key Points

  • Roy Schoenberg, co-founder of American Well Corp., will take charge of Amazon's healthcare unit effective July 1.
  • Neil Lindsay, who has led Amazon's healthcare business since November 2021 and worked at Amazon for 16 years, will leave the company before year-end.
  • Amazon's healthcare operations include One Medical clinics and a mail-order prescription service; the company says the unit is among its fastest-growing but does not report separate financial results.

Amazon announced Wednesday that Dr. Roy Schoenberg will assume leadership of its healthcare division effective July 1. Schoenberg is a founder of American Well Corp., a company focused on telehealth medicine, and brings a background in digital health startups to the role.

Schoenberg stepped down as executive chairman of Amwell after serving as co-chief executive officer through 2024, a role he held until his brother, Ido Schoenberg, became sole CEO. In addition to his Amwell ties, Schoenberg is chief executive of Aileen.ai, a privately held elder care start-up that he co-founded.

Current head of Amazon's healthcare business, Neil Lindsay, will leave his post and depart the company before the end of the year. Lindsay has overseen the healthcare unit since November 2021 and has spent 16 years at Amazon. Prior to leading the healthcare division, he served as senior vice president of the Prime membership program and held several marketing roles at the company, including positions related to Kindle e-readers. The company notes that Lindsay did not have a prior background in healthcare when he began running the unit.

Amazon's healthcare operations encompass the One Medical chain of clinics and its mail-order prescription service. The company has characterized the healthcare business as one of its fastest-growing units, though it does not disclose separate financial results for that segment.

The leadership change marks a shift toward a leader with established telehealth experience. Schoenberg's prior roles at Amwell and his involvement with an elder care technology start-up are the principal credentials the company has highlighted in announcing the transition. Lindsay's tenure at Amazon included nearly five years overseeing the healthcare effort and a broader 16-year career within the company.

Amazon did not provide separate financial figures for the healthcare unit in its announcement, and the company has not released additional details about operational plans or immediate strategic priorities tied to the leadership change.

Risks

  • Leadership transition creates uncertainty about near-term leadership continuity for the healthcare unit - impacts healthcare and technology sectors.
  • The healthcare business's financial performance is not reported separately, limiting transparency for investors and analysts - impacts equity markets and healthcare investors.
  • Neil Lindsay's departure removes a long-tenured Amazon executive with cross-business experience; differences in background between outgoing and incoming leaders could introduce operational uncertainty - impacts healthcare services and telehealth operations.
