Aberdeen Group plc announced that Torbjörn Magnusson has joined its board as a non-executive director and has been named chair-designate. The company said Magnusson will assume the chair position following the receipt of necessary regulatory approvals.
The appointment follows Aberdeen's earlier disclosure that Sir Douglas Flint would step down as chair by the 2026 annual general meeting. In the interim, Jonathan Asquith has been acting as interim chair and will continue in that capacity until Magnusson's formal installation as chair is completed.
Asquith commented on the appointment, describing Magnusson as a well-regarded international business leader with more than 30 years of leadership experience across CEO, non-executive director, and chair roles in large financial services organisations. He said the board is delighted to have Magnusson join as a non-executive director and chair-designate.
Magnusson's recent track record includes serving as chair of Nordea Bank Abp from 2019 to 2022 and as deputy chair from 2022 to 2023. He was chief executive officer and president of Sampo for nearly six years until 2025, during which time he led Sampo's a31.7 billion acquisition of Hastings. Prior to that, he served as president and CEO of If P&C Insurance from 2002 until 2019 and then as chair from 2019 to 2025.
Magnusson currently serves as a non-executive director of Canopius Group and has recently stepped down as a non-executive director of Hastings Group. Commenting on his new role, Magnusson said Aberdeen has materially transformed its performance in recent years and built foundations for long-term value creation. He added that he looks forward to working with the board and the company's management team to further that progress and help the business achieve its ambitions.
The company disclosed that Magnusson will receive an annual fee of a3475,000 for his role.
Context and next steps
The appointment is conditional on regulatory approvals, and the exact timing for when Magnusson will take over as chair was not specified beyond that condition. Jonathan Asquith will remain in the chair role until Magnusson's appointment is effective, and Sir Douglas Flint is expected to step down by the 2026 annual general meeting as previously announced.
This development is focused on corporate governance at Aberdeen Group and will be relevant to stakeholders monitoring leadership continuity, board composition, and executive oversight at the asset management firm.
