Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia conducted overnight attacks involving drones and missiles, resulting in civilian deaths, multiple injuries and significant property damage across at least two regions.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had cautioned on Monday that Ukrainian intelligence indicated a potential imminent, mass attack by Russian forces. The strikes that followed affected southeastern and eastern parts of the country.
In Zaporizhzhia, located in southeastern Ukraine, regional authorities said one person was killed and five others were wounded after a combined drone and missile strike on the city. Governor Ivan Fedorov described the incident as a "massive combined strike on Zaporizhzhia using drones and missiles." He reported damage to six apartment buildings, two private homes, a store, several non-residential buildings and an industrial infrastructure facility.
Fedorov posted images on the Telegram messaging platform that showed firefighters working to extinguish a blaze in a high-rise building and attending to a smaller structure that was engulfed in flames.
Separately, in the eastern Poltava region authorities said two people died and 11 others sustained injuries in an attack that damaged residential buildings and a hotel. Regional officials made clear that both private and public structures were affected by the overnight strikes.
The incidents described by local officials emphasize the toll on civilian infrastructure - from apartment blocks and private homes to commercial and industrial sites - and the immediate human cost in fatalities and injuries. Emergency services in the impacted areas were depicted responding to fires and structural damage.
Official statements identified the weaponry used as a combination of drones and missiles, and provided preliminary counts of casualties and damaged properties. Beyond the casualty and damage reports, authorities have signaled continued concern about the possibility of further large-scale attacks based on intelligence assessments shared by the presidential office.
