In Davos, Switzerland, Finnish President Alexander Stubb conveyed on January 22 his belief that U.S. President Donald Trump is actively applying pressure on Russia in relation to the war in Ukraine. Speaking during the World Economic Forum, Stubb remarked on the improving conditions for Western powers in the conflict's diplomatic landscape.
Stubb noted that the relationship tensions surrounding Greenland had de-escalated between the United States and Europe, setting a foundation for collaborative peace efforts. He highlighted the increased momentum of peace negotiations since Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law, supplemented the diplomatic task force led by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff.
According to Stubb, this combined diplomatic initiative has strengthened a 20-point peace plan that includes provisions for Ukraine's security guarantees and the country's post-conflict rebuilding. He conveyed optimism from the perspectives of Ukraine, the United States, and European stakeholders regarding the prospects of the peace process.
"I believe President Trump is placing considerable pressure on Russia, and I am hopeful that this strategy will persist," Stubb told Reuters in a Davos interview. Despite this, he acknowledged reservations about Russia's willingness to accept the outlined peace plan due to the nation's domestic political considerations.
Separately, President Trump described his recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Davos as "very good." He affirmed his position that the conflict with Russia should conclude, signaling ongoing U.S. engagement in seeking a resolution.
