Shares in Paris ended the day in positive territory with the CAC 40 up 0.79% and the SBF 120 rising 0.74%. Gains were concentrated in Industrials, Financials and Consumer Goods, while several individual names posted pronounced moves in both directions. Market breadth was positive but narrow, volatility reached a 52-week high and commodities showed notable weakness.

Key Points

  • CAC 40 rose 0.79% while the SBF 120 gained 0.74%, led by Industrials, Financials and Consumer Goods.
  • Large individual moves included ArcelorMittal, Kering and Societe Generale among the CAC 40 leaders, and Worldline, Forvia and Technip Energies among SBF 120 gainers.
  • Volatility reached a 52-week high for the CAC 40 VIX, and commodities were weak with significant drops in gold and oil prices.

Paris equities closed higher on Monday as select sectors pushed the market upward. The CAC 40 finished the session up 0.79%, and the broader SBF 120 rose 0.74%.

Winners at the close

Luxury group Kering SA (EPA:PRTP) added 4.72% or 11.05 points to close at 245.20. Banking group Societe Generale SA (EPA:SOGN) also posted a strong finish, up 4.69% or 2.86 points to 63.84.

Within the SBF 120, several smaller-cap names recorded larger percentage advances. Worldline SA (EPA:WLN) climbed 7.82% to 0.35. Automotive supplier Forvia (EPA:FRVIA) gained 6.56% to settle at 9.58. Technip Energies BV (EPA:TE) rose 6.50% to finish at 34.10.

Laggers and notable declines

Not all stocks moved higher. On the CAC 40, Euronext (EPA:ENX) fell 1.85% or 2.50 points to close at 132.90. Testing and certification group Bureau Veritas SA (EPA:BVI) declined 1.74% or 0.46 points to 26.00, while retailer Carrefour SA (EPA:CARR) eased 1.57% or 0.24 points to 15.01.

The SBF 120 contained steeper declines. Vaccine developer Valneva (EPA:VLS) dropped 39.01% to 2.78. Teleperformance SE (EPA:TEPRF) lost 3.11% to settle at 49.51, and Euroapi SAS (EPA:EAPI) fell 2.99% to 1.27. Shares of Teleperformance hit five-year lows in the session, with the stock down 3.11% or 1.59 to 49.51.

Market internals and volatility

Advancers outnumbered decliners on the Paris exchange, with 252 stocks higher, 240 lower and 77 unchanged. The CAC 40 VIX, which measures implied volatility for CAC 40 options, was unchanged at 18.96 and registered a new 52-week high.

Commodities and energy prices

Commodity markets showed material moves. Gold Futures for June delivery were down 4.32% or 199.29 to $4,410.31 a troy ounce. In energy markets, crude oil for May delivery fell 8.48% or 8.33 to $89.90 a barrel. The June Brent contract declined 8.42% or 8.96 to trade at $97.45 a barrel.

Currency and futures

In FX trading, EUR/USD was unchanged at 1.16, while EUR/GBP was unchanged at 0.87. The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.39% at 99.07.

What this means

The Paris market closed with modest gains led by Industrials, Financials and Consumer Goods, even as volatility reached a one-year peak and commodities, notably oil and gold, moved lower. A small number of stocks dominated percentage moves on the SBF 120, with several large declines counterbalanced by sizable advances elsewhere.

Risks

  • Elevated implied volatility - CAC 40 VIX at a 52-week high - could increase market uncertainty for equity and options traders, affecting Financials and broader market stability.
  • Sharp declines in individual names, such as Valneva down 39.01% and Teleperformance hitting five-year lows, present company-specific risk for investors in those stocks and related sectors.
  • Steep falls in crude oil and Brent prices may create near-term headwinds for energy and commodity-linked sectors as oil fell over 8% in the session.
