Nintendo hikes Switch 2 pricing globally as costs climb

Japanese videogame maker Nintendo Co said on Friday it will raise the price of its next-generation console, the Nintendo Switch 2, as well as adjust prices for existing Switch hardware and subscription services in response to changing market conditions and rising costs.

In Japan, the list price for the Switch 2 will be increased by 20%, moving from 49,980 yen to 59,980 yen, with that new price effective from May 25. The company also said it will raise retail prices for current Switch models sold in Japan by as much as 33%.

Outside Japan, Nintendo outlined staggered price changes. In the United States the Switch 2 will be priced at $499.99, up from $449.99, with that revision taking effect on Sept. 1. In Europe the new price will be 499.99 euros, rising from 469.99 euros.

Nintendo also announced adjustments to its online subscription in Japan. Annual individual memberships for Nintendo Switch Online in Japan will increase to 3,000 yen from 2,400 yen, with that fee change beginning July 1.

The company said these pricing revisions reflect shifts in market conditions and its medium- to long-term business outlook. In addition to console and subscription price adjustments, Nintendo pointed to rising material costs as a reason for higher prices on ancillary physical products it sells in Japan, including playing cards and traditional Hanafuda card items.

Market reaction was immediate: shares of Nintendo climbed nearly 4% to 7,667.0 yen by 02:59 ET (06:59 GMT) following the announcements.

Nintendo framed the moves in the context of broader industry pressures. The company noted that gaming firms are contending with elevated component costs, fluctuations in currency values, and ongoing uncertainty in the global consumer electronics market.
