Leapmotor reported 110,155 new energy vehicle deliveries in the first quarter, a near 26% year-over-year increase and the company’s fourth consecutive quarter above 100,000 units. The Hangzhou-based automaker also delivered 50,029 vehicles in March and has set ambitious targets for domestic and overseas sales while expanding retail and service footprints in Europe and South America.

Key Points

  • Leapmotor delivered 110,155 new energy vehicles in Q1, up nearly 26% year-over-year, marking the fourth consecutive quarter above 100,000 units.
  • BYD led China’s EV sales with 688,993 cars in Q1 but saw a roughly 30% decline from the prior year; its exports rose over 55% to 321,165 cars.
  • Leapmotor targets 1 million domestic sales and 100,000-150,000 exports this year, operates in-house battery and powertrain production, and has expanded sales and service outlets in Europe and South America.

Leapmotor said Wednesday that it delivered 110,155 new energy vehicles in the first quarter, representing an increase of nearly 26% compared with the same period a year earlier. The automaker noted that this marks the fourth straight quarter in which deliveries have exceeded the 100,000-unit threshold.

Based in Hangzhou and founded in 2015, the company reported 50,029 vehicle deliveries in March alone, a monthly total that outpaced most domestic competitors, the company said.

Market context and peer performance

BYD remained China’s largest seller of electric vehicles in the quarter, reporting 688,993 cars sold, though that figure was down about 30% from the year-ago period. BYD’s export volumes climbed by more than 55% in the first quarter to reach 321,165 cars. The company has said it intends to sell well over 1 million cars overseas this year but has not provided a specific domestic sales target.

Leapmotor’s targets, production footprint and partnerships

Leapmotor has set a domestic sales goal of 1 million cars for the year and an export objective of between 100,000 and 150,000 vehicles. The company does not disclose monthly overseas sales separately, leaving the monthly international breakdown unclear.

Like BYD, Leapmotor manufactures key components internally, including its battery and powertrain. The company has established a partnership with Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) aimed at the global market.

On its international retail and service presence, Leapmotor had more than 800 sales and service outlets in Europe as of the end of 2025, and at least 30 outlets in South America. The company announced the opening of its first overseas innovation center in Munich, Germany on March 20.

Summary assessment

Leapmotor’s first-quarter delivery figure underscores continued production and distribution momentum, reflected in repeated quarterly deliveries above 100,000 units and an expanding overseas footprint. The company’s in-house production of batteries and powertrains, along with a global partnership, further define its operating model.

Risks

  • Leapmotor does not break out monthly overseas sales, creating limited visibility on short-term export performance - impacts assessment of international revenue and distribution strategy.
  • BYD’s 30% year-over-year drop in domestic sales signals volatility in market volumes, which could affect competitive dynamics in the Chinese EV market - impacting manufacturers and suppliers.
  • Leapmotor’s export and domestic sales targets are ambitious relative to the disclosed figures, and the company’s progress toward those goals is not detailed month-to-month - increasing uncertainty for investors and supply-chain partners.
