L3 Technologies Inc. and L3Harris Technologies Inc. have each been awarded U.S. defense contracts that together total roughly $363.57 million, according to contract notifications. The awards cover sustainment and logistics for ground control elements and extended sustainment work for space command-and-control systems.
In the first award, L3 Technologies Inc. received a $283.3 million indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract to deliver logistics support and sustainment services for ground control element systems and related ancillary capabilities. The work is to be performed at the company’s Salt Lake City, Utah facility and is scheduled for completion by January 29, 2031. The contract was procured as a sole source acquisition, with an initial obligation of $3.5 million in fiscal 2026 operations and maintenance funds. Oversight for the award is being provided by the Air Force Command, Control, Communication, and Battle Management Portfolio Acquisition Executive Office located at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts.
Separately, L3Harris Technologies Inc. obtained an $80.27 million modification to an existing contract tied to sustainment for the National Space Defense Center and the Distributed Space Command and Control System. This modification constitutes Option Year Seven of the original agreement and raises the pact’s total value to $1.59 billion from $1.51 billion.
The L3Harris modification allocates funding and scope for depot-level maintenance, mission software support, hardware modification support, engineering analysis, cybersecurity support, and technical data management, with limited supply support included. Work under this modification will be carried out in multiple locations, including Colorado Springs, Colorado; Vandenberg Space Force Base, California; and Dahlgren, Virginia. The contract modification is expected to run through January 31, 2027.
For the L3Harris work, the government is obligating $78.3 million in fiscal 2026 operations and maintenance funds and an additional $1.2 million in fiscal 2026 research, development, test and evaluation funds. The Space Systems Command Directorate of Contracting at Peterson SFB, Colorado, is responsible for administering the contract.
Both awards highlight ongoing sustainment and logistics commitments by the U.S. defense establishment across ground control and space command-and-control systems. The L3 Technologies contract is being managed by an Air Force portfolio office at Hanscom AFB, while the L3Harris modification is overseen by the Space Systems Command contracting directorate at Peterson SFB.
Key points
- L3 Technologies received a $283.3 million sole-source ID/IQ contract for ground control element sustainment, with work through January 29, 2031 and $3.5 million in fiscal 2026 O&M funds obligated initially.
- L3Harris secured an $80.27 million modification (Option Year Seven), raising the contract total to $1.59 billion and extending work through January 31, 2027 across multiple U.S. locations.
- Sectors impacted include defense prime contractors, aerospace sustainment, and government contracting operations.
Risks and uncertainties
- Initial funding for the L3 Technologies award consists of $3.5 million in fiscal 2026 operations and maintenance funds, indicating future work depends on subsequent appropriations and obligations within the stated contract period.
- The L3Harris modification relies on $78.3 million in fiscal 2026 operations and maintenance funds and $1.2 million in fiscal 2026 research, development, test and evaluation funds, so continued execution depends on those fiscal allocations and program administration.
- Work is scheduled across several sites for the L3Harris contract (Colorado Springs; Vandenberg Space Force Base, California; Dahlgren, Virginia), which may introduce logistical or scheduling complexities inherent to multi-site sustainment programs.
