Intel Corporation saw its stock rise about 1% on Thursday after the company and Google unveiled a multiyear collaboration focused on enhancing AI and cloud infrastructure. Central to the agreement is a continued role for Intel Xeon processors across Google Cloud, and an expanded effort to co-develop custom ASIC-based infrastructure processing units, or IPUs.

Under the terms of the partnership, Intel Xeon processors will remain the primary CPUs powering Google Cloud infrastructure for AI workloads, inference and general-purpose computing. The companies said they will broaden their joint development of custom IPUs built on ASIC technology, with the stated objective of improving efficiency, utilization and large-scale performance.

Google Cloud already deploys Intel Xeon processors across workload-optimized instance families, including the latest Intel Xeon 6 processors that power C4 and N4 instances. Those platforms are used for a spectrum of tasks, from coordinating large-scale AI training to latency-sensitive inference and standard computing duties.

The announced IPUs are intended to take on infrastructure responsibilities such as networking, storage and security functions that are typically handled by host CPUs. By offloading those tasks, the IPUs are described as a way to improve CPU utilization and to provide more predictable performance in hyperscale AI environments. The companies say this approach is designed to free up CPU cycles and enable cloud providers to scale compute capacity more efficiently.

"AI is reshaping how infrastructure is built and scaled," said Lip-Bu Tan, CEO of Intel. "Scaling AI requires more than accelerators - it requires balanced systems. CPUs and IPUs are central to delivering the performance, efficiency and flexibility modern AI workloads demand."

Amin Vahdat, SVP & Chief Technologist, AI Infrastructure at Google, emphasized that CPUs and infrastructure acceleration remain core elements of AI systems, and noted that Intel has been a trusted partner for nearly two decades.

Intel and Google said the collaboration will span multiple generations of Intel Xeon processors with the goal of improving performance, energy efficiency and total cost of ownership across Google’s global infrastructure.
