Delta Air Lines said on Saturday that it had added further cancellations for flights serving Atlanta and locations along the U.S. East Coast, specifically calling out impacts at its Boston and New York hubs as the carrier continues to revise schedules in response to winter storm Fern.
The airline warned that ice accumulation is expected to affect Atlanta on Sunday, and that significant snowfall will begin in the Northeast on Sunday afternoon. Delta said the storm is disrupting U.S. air travel, triggering cancellations, delays and travel waivers as ice, snow and strong winds move through major hubs and regional airports across the South, East and central United States.
On Friday Delta urged travelers with plans this weekend to reschedule, noting that the storm threatens to upend operations and cause widespread cancellations. The carrier said customers should expect cancellations across the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, including cities such as Nashville and Raleigh-Durham, as the weather system threatens weekend travel.
Earlier in the week, on Thursday, Delta canceled flights at a number of airports in five states and cautioned that slower operations could produce additional delays and cancellations and complicate rebooking during one of the busier winter travel periods.
The National Weather Service warned that a combination of freezing rain, sleet and snow could create hazardous travel conditions and cause power outages and tree damage across the Southeast, with heavier snowfall expected farther north as the storm moves up the country.
