BYD Company Limited released monthly production and sales figures showing a marked contraction in its new energy vehicle - NEV - business for March 2026. The company produced 300,399 NEVs in March, a 33.02% decrease from 395,091 units in March 2025, and recorded March sales of 300,222 units, down 30.01% from 377,420 a year earlier.
Broken down by segment, the passenger vehicle category experienced similar declines. Passenger vehicle production fell 33.22% to 295,412 units in March, while passenger vehicle sales declined 30.13% to 295,693 units for the month.
BYD provided separate counts for its battery electric vehicle - BEV - and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle - PHEV - lines. BEV production decreased 30.42% to 148,666 units in March, and BEV sales dropped 25.46% to 147,601 units. PHEV production fell 35.36% to 146,746 units, with PHEV sales down 33.54% to 148,092 units in the same month.
On a year-to-date basis for the first three months of 2026, BYD produced 708,037 new energy vehicles, representing a 33.02% decline from 1,057,079 units in the first quarter of 2025. Year-to-date sales reached 700,463 units, a decrease of 30.01% compared with 1,000,804 units in the same period last year.
Commercial vehicle activity also softened in March. Commercial vehicle production decreased 19.20% to 4,987 units, and commercial vehicle sales fell 22.00% to 4,529 units. In contrast to the broader declines, BYD reported growth in its bus subsegment: both bus production and bus sales rose 27.68% to 663 units.
Context and implications
The figures show a broad pullback across BYD's core NEV categories for March, with both BEV and PHEV lines contributing to the year-on-year falls in production and sales. Passenger vehicles track closely with the aggregate NEV performance. The company’s bus activity, however, recorded a gain in both production and sales for the month, and commercial vehicles weakened less sharply than passenger lines.
These results cover both monthly and first-quarter year-to-date comparisons and preserve the company-provided counts and percentage changes across segments.
