Apple plans to broaden Siri's capabilities by permitting rival artificial intelligence services to operate through the voice assistant, according to people familiar with the matter. The change is expected to arrive with the company's iOS 27 update and would expand on Apple’s current arrangement with ChatGPT.
The update would let third-party AI applications integrate directly with Siri so that users can route individual queries to external services from within the assistant. Examples of services the integration would support, as cited by those familiar with the plan, include Alphabet’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude.
Apple is reported to be building a set of developer tools that will enable chatbot apps downloaded through the App Store to interact with Siri and other features within its Apple Intelligence suite. As part of that design, users would be given the option to select which AI service processes each request issued to Siri.
Opening Siri to outside chatbot providers represents a notable shift in Apple’s approach to artificial intelligence as the company seeks to position the iPhone as a broader AI platform. Siri, which was introduced more than a decade ago, is central to that strategy.
The overhaul could also create a new revenue channel for Apple: the company may take a share of subscription sales for third-party AI services routed via Siri, according to people familiar with the matter.
Apple is expected to preview these software enhancements at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, though those plans are subject to change. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
