US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to make a visit to India in May as the two countries work to recalibrate a bilateral relationship that has faced friction over US tariff measures.
The planned trip was revealed on social media by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor following a meeting in Washington between Rubio and India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Gor posted that the meeting was "productive" and that it focused on several areas of mutual interest, including trade, critical minerals, defense and the Quad. He added that Secretary Rubio looks forward to visiting India next month. The ambassador did not supply a specific date for the trip.
"Welcome to the White House @VikramMisri! Productive meeting with @SecRubio that focused on our bilateral relationship, especially trade, critical minerals, defense and the Quad. Secretary Rubio looks forward to visiting India next month!" - Sergio Gor
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has not provided an immediate response to requests for additional information on the timing or agenda of the visit.
This forthcoming trip will be Secretary Rubio’s first to India since assuming office. It follows a series of engagements by other senior US officials in New Delhi over the past year, including a visit by Vice President JD Vance.
The announcement arrives against a backdrop of advancing US-India cooperation. In February, both countries reached a trade agreement that removed high US tariffs on Indian exports and set up a framework intended to expand bilateral trade. That agreement remains subject to finalization as officials continue work on its details.
Given the stated focus areas from the Washington meeting, sectors likely to be affected by developments in the relationship include trade-exposed exporters, industries tied to critical minerals, and defense suppliers engaged in bilateral cooperation. While the public statements outline priorities, specifics on the itinerary and any negotiating milestones for the trade deal have not been disclosed.
As both capitals proceed with diplomatic engagements, observers will watch for formal scheduling and any further statements that clarify the scope of Secretary Rubio’s trip and the timeline for finalizing the trade agreement.
