President Donald Trump on Friday announced a temporary three-day ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war, set to take effect from May 9 through May 11.
In a post on Truth Social, the president said the halt would include a suspension of all kinetic activity between the two sides. He also said the arrangement would feature a prisoner swap in which 1,000 prisoners from each country would be exchanged.
Trump noted that the dates of the proposed pause coincide with Victory Day celebrations in Russia and added that Ukraine was also a participant in World War II. He said he conveyed the request for the temporary stop directly to President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and that both leaders agreed to the short-term halt in fighting.
In his post, Trump wrote: "Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War." He further said that talks continue aimed at ending what he described as the biggest conflict since World War II and that the sides are getting closer to a resolution.
The announcement specifies the three calendar days for the ceasefire and the scale of the prisoner exchange as 1,000 individuals from each side. Beyond those details, the statement provides no additional operational information or implementation timeline for how the suspension of kinetic activity or the transfers would be carried out.
The president's post on Truth Social served as the public notice of the proposed pause and the terms he outlined, including the mutual agreement he said he received from the two national leaders. The comments on talks and prospects for a broader resolution were presented by the president in his post as part of an ongoing diplomatic process.
